Costa Rica Car Rental Insurance

Costa Rica rental-car protection becomes easier to understand when you separate liability involving third parties from damage, loss or theft of the rental vehicle.

For the Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica terms reviewed for this page, Third Party Liability (TPL) must be satisfied either through acceptable written liability coverage valid in Costa Rica or through the applicable rental protection arrangement.

Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection (CDW-TP) is treated separately. Under the reviewed terms, CDW-TP is optional, but declining it can leave the renter with significant financial responsibility for damage, loss or theft of the rental vehicle.

Before reserving, compare the protections, deductibles, deposit or authorization requirements and exclusions shown for your exact rental.

Quick Answer

TPL and CDW-TP address different risks.

TPL addresses covered liability involving other people or their property. CDW-TP is a contractual waiver related to damage to, loss of or theft of the rental vehicle.

For the Alamo, National and Enterprise terms reviewed for this page, TPL must be satisfied through acceptable written liability coverage valid in Costa Rica or the applicable rental-company protection arrangement. CDW-TP is listed separately as optional under those reviewed terms.

The reservation and signed rental agreement determine the protections and deductibles that actually apply to your rental.

What Car Rental Insurance Is Required in Costa Rica?

For the Alamo, National and Enterprise terms reviewed for this page, Third Party Liability must be satisfied.

The reviewed terms provide two relevant paths: acceptable written proof of liability coverage that specifically applies in Costa Rica, or the applicable protection arrangement offered through the rental company.

Travel insurance, third-party booking-site protection and credit- or debit-card benefits should not automatically be assumed to satisfy this requirement. The reviewed rental terms specifically state that those forms of coverage are not accepted as substitutes for TPL.

Because protection conditions can vary by reservation, always review the terms displayed for your exact brand, location, vehicle and rate.

For a focused explanation, see the guide to Third Party Liability in Costa Rica.

What Is Third Party Liability?

Third Party Liability (TPL) relates to covered damage or injury involving other people or their property during the rental period, subject to the applicable limits and rental agreement.

TPL should not be confused with protection for the rental vehicle itself.

The terms reviewed for this page state that TPL can carry a deductible ranging from US$250 to US$5,000.

That deductible is separate from the deductible that can apply to damage, loss or theft of the rental vehicle.

Having CDW-TP therefore does not automatically replace Third Party Liability.

What Is CDW-TP?

Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection (CDW-TP) is a contractual waiver rather than an insurance policy.

Its purpose is to reduce or waive part of the renter's financial responsibility for damage to, loss of or theft of the rental vehicle, subject to the rental agreement and applicable exclusions.

Under the reviewed terms, CDW-TP is optional.

A renter may instead seek to rely on acceptable outside vehicle-damage coverage when the rental company accepts the required documentation.

For a more detailed explanation of these concepts, review the CDW, LDW and Theft Protection guide.

What Is the CDW Deductible?

The booking terms used for this program provide a CDW deductible of up to US$1,000.

This amount should not be treated as a universal deductible for every company, rate, location or protection package.

The deductible displayed during booking and in the final rental agreement governs the transaction.

If a protection package or Deductible Protection applies, the renter's deductible exposure may be different according to those terms.

The broader Costa Rica rental car deductibles guide explains how deductibles relate to the protection selected.

What Is the Theft Protection Deductible?

The booking terms used for this program provide a US$2,000 Theft Protection deductible under the standard CDW-TP structure.

Theft Protection should not automatically be treated as identical to collision-damage protection.

A protection package or Deductible Protection may alter the renter's exposure, subject to the applicable agreement.

Always use the deductible stated in the reservation and signed rental contract rather than assuming that a deductible from another brand or rate applies.

What Protection Packages Are Available?

The three brands use different package names:

  • Alamo Protection Package — APP

  • National Protection Package — NPP

  • Enterprise Protection Package — EPP

The packages reviewed for this page include:

  • CDW-TP

  • Tire and Windshield Protection (TWP)

  • Deductible Protection (DP)

  • Third Party Liability (TPL)

These packages combine contractual protections under the rental agreement.

They should not be described simply as “complete insurance” or interpreted as covering every possible type of damage or use.

The Costa Rica rental car protection packages guide explains the package structure separately.

What Is Deductible Protection?

Deductible Protection (DP) is designed to reduce deductible exposure when used with the applicable vehicle and liability protections.

DP is included in the reviewed APP, NPP and EPP packages.

A reduced or zero deductible does not mean every circumstance involving the vehicle is covered.

Protection remains subject to the rental agreement, including exclusions and actions that can invalidate the protection.

What Is Tire and Windshield Protection?

Tire and Windshield Protection (TWP) addresses a specific area of vehicle exposure separate from general collision or theft protection.

TWP is included in the APP, NPP and EPP packages reviewed for this page.

Do not automatically assume that standard CDW-TP provides identical protection for tires and windshields.

The dedicated Tire and Windshield Protection guide explains this protection in more detail.

Can You Use Credit Card Rental Car Insurance in Costa Rica?

Possibly for eligible damage or theft involving the rental vehicle, but a credit-card benefit should never be assumed to replace every rental-company protection or requirement.

Before traveling, ask the card issuer or benefits administrator to confirm in writing:

  • Whether Costa Rica is covered.

  • Whether your vehicle category qualifies.

  • Whether the full rental period is eligible.

  • Whether collision is covered.

  • Whether theft is covered.

  • What exclusions apply.

  • Which cardholder must rent the vehicle.

  • Which card must be used for payment.

  • Whether the benefit requires you to decline the rental company's CDW.

Then compare that documentation with the requirements of the exact rental reservation.

Credit-card vehicle protection and Third Party Liability are different issues. The Costa Rica rental terms reviewed for this page state that liability protection accompanying U.S. credit or debit cards is not accepted as a substitute for TPL.

Read the dedicated guide on credit card rental coverage in Costa Rica before relying on that benefit.

What Happens If You Decline CDW-TP?

Declining CDW-TP can increase your direct financial exposure to damage, loss or theft of the rental vehicle.

Under the reviewed terms, a renter who presents acceptable outside coverage and declines both CDW-TP and the brand protection package can still remain responsible to the rental company according to the rental agreement.

An additional credit-card authorization may also be required.

Outside coverage does not necessarily mean the rental company will wait for your card issuer or insurer to settle a claim.

The rental company's contract and the outside insurer's reimbursement or claims process are separate arrangements.

Can Outside Coverage Reduce the Security Deposit?

Do not assume so.

Protection selections, outside coverage and the security authorization are related but separate parts of the rental transaction.

The amount of an authorization or deposit can depend on the brand, rate, vehicle and protection choices.

Review the specific reservation before assuming that a coverage letter will reduce or eliminate a hold.

For more information, see the Costa Rica rental car security deposit guide.

Does a Protection Package Cover Every Type of Damage?

No.

All protections remain subject to the rental agreement and its exclusions.

Even when Deductible Protection reduces the deductible, that does not mean prohibited use, contract violations, excluded actions or every possible type of damage is covered.

Do not evaluate a protection solely by whether the displayed deductible is low or zero.

Review what the protection applies to, what it excludes and what actions can invalidate it.

How Should You Compare Two Rental Rates?

Do not compare only the base daily vehicle rate.

One quote may contain different protection selections or financial exposure than another.

For a meaningful comparison, check:

  • TPL status.

  • TPL deductible.

  • CDW-TP status.

  • CDW deductible.

  • Theft Protection deductible.

  • Deductible Protection.

  • Tire and Windshield Protection.

  • Security deposit or authorization.

  • Accepted outside coverage.

  • Additional rental charges.

  • Final total displayed during booking.

A lower base rate is not necessarily a lower total rental cost once required and selected protections are considered.

What Should You Check Before Booking?

Before completing the reservation, confirm the protection details that can affect your cost and financial responsibility.

Review:

  • Whether TPL has been satisfied.

  • The applicable TPL deductible.

  • CDW-TP selection.

  • CDW deductible.

  • Theft Protection deductible.

  • Whether Deductible Protection applies.

  • Whether Tire and Windshield Protection applies.

  • Protection exclusions.

  • Security-deposit or authorization requirements.

  • Whether outside coverage is accepted.

  • Whether credit-card coverage documentation is acceptable.

  • The final rental total.

Save the reservation confirmation and any outside-coverage documentation you plan to present.

At pickup, compare the final rental agreement with the protection choices selected during booking before signing.

Common Costa Rica Car Rental Insurance Mistakes

One common mistake is assuming that credit-card coverage means every rental obligation is covered.

Credit-card benefits can focus on vehicle damage or theft and may not satisfy Third Party Liability requirements.

Another mistake is treating TPL and CDW as different names for the same protection. They address different risks.

Travelers can also incorrectly assume that purchasing a protection package means there are no exclusions or rental-contract obligations.

Finally, avoid applying a deductible or protection rule from one company, office, rate or vehicle category to another rental.

The final reservation and rental agreement should always be reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is car rental insurance mandatory in Costa Rica?

For the Alamo, National and Enterprise terms reviewed for this page, TPL must be satisfied through acceptable written liability coverage valid in Costa Rica or the applicable rental-company protection arrangement.

CDW-TP is listed separately as optional under the reviewed terms.

Is CDW the same as liability insurance?

No.

CDW-TP concerns financial responsibility related to damage, loss or theft of the rental vehicle. TPL addresses covered liability involving third parties.

Does my credit card cover a rental car in Costa Rica?

Some credit cards may provide eligible vehicle-damage or theft coverage in Costa Rica.

Coverage depends on the issuer and benefit terms. Confirm eligibility and documentation in writing and verify what the rental company accepts. Do not assume that a credit-card benefit satisfies TPL.

What is the CDW deductible?

The booking terms used through this program provide a CDW deductible of up to US$1,000.

The deductible displayed in the reservation and final rental agreement governs the rental.

What is the Theft Protection deductible?

The booking terms used through this program provide a US$2,000 Theft Protection deductible under the standard CDW-TP structure.

Protection packages or Deductible Protection can alter the renter's exposure according to the rental agreement.

What is Deductible Protection?

Deductible Protection, or DP, is intended to reduce deductible exposure when combined with the applicable protections.

It is included in the reviewed APP, NPP and EPP protection packages.

Does a protection package cover everything?

No.

Protection remains subject to exclusions and conditions in the rental agreement. A reduced or zero deductible does not mean every form of damage, prohibited use or contract violation is covered.

Should I compare rental rates before or after adding protection?

Compare the final reservation totals and financial exposure, not only the initial vehicle rate.

Review required and selected protections, deductibles, deposits or authorizations and other applicable charges before deciding which rental arrangement fits your trip.

Review Protection Terms Before Reserving

Start by determining how Third Party Liability will be satisfied for your reservation.

Then review CDW-TP, Theft Protection, deductibles, Tire and Windshield Protection and any protection package offered with your rate.

If you intend to use outside or credit-card coverage, obtain the required documentation before traveling and confirm that it addresses the protection you believe it provides.

Finally, compare the total reservation, security authorization and remaining deductible exposure before completing the booking.

Last reviewed: August 2026.

Rental policies, deductibles and protection products can change by brand, office, rate and vehicle category. The terms presented during booking and in the signed rental agreement govern the transaction.
