Tire and Windshield Protection for Costa Rica Rental Cars
Tire and Windshield Protection (TWP) reduces or removes the renter’s financial responsibility for qualifying damage to the rental vehicle’s tires and windshield. In the Costa Rica terms reviewed, Alamo and Enterprise state that TWP is included with CDW-TP, while National explicitly includes TWP in its National Protection Package (NPP). Exact availability, exclusions and financial responsibility should still be checked for the reservation and rental agreement.
What Does Tire and Windshield Protection Cover?
TWP addresses qualifying damage to the rental vehicle’s tires and windshield. Alamo Costa Rica describes the protection as releasing the customer from liability for damage to those items.
Travelers should not assume that every collision waiver, credit-card benefit or outside policy automatically treats tire and windshield damage the same way.

Check current vehicle availability, then review the protection products for the exact brand, location, vehicle class and rate.
Is TWP Included with CDW-TP?
For some current Costa Rica rental terms, yes.
Alamo’s current Costa Rica terms and SJO policy state that TWP is included with Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection (CDW-TP). Current Enterprise policies reviewed for SJO, LIR and Tamarindo use the same wording.
National’s current SJO and LIR policies confirm TWP within the National Protection Package (NPP), together with CDW-TP, Deductible Protection and Third-Party Liability. Those National CDW-TP sections do not separately state that TWP is included with standalone CDW-TP.
Because the wording differs, verify what your selected reservation includes rather than assuming TWP is packaged identically across all three brands.
Is TWP Included in APP, NPP and EPP?
Yes. Current protection-package descriptions reviewed for all three brands list TWP as a component:
Alamo Protection Package (APP).
National Protection Package (NPP).
Enterprise Protection Package (EPP).
The packages also include CDW-TP, Deductible Protection and Third-Party Liability. Current package terms state that no deductible applies, subject to the rental agreement and actions that can invalidate protection.
TWP vs Roadside Assistance
TWP and Roadside Assistance are different. TWP addresses financial responsibility for qualifying tire and windshield damage. Roadside Assistance provides help when the vehicle needs specific roadside service.
Current National and Enterprise Costa Rica policies list Roadside Assistance separately. Their terms include non-accident towing, flat-tire service when no inflated spare is available, lockout service, jump-starts and limited fuel delivery.
A flat tire can therefore involve two questions: who pays for the damaged tire, and who provides roadside help.
Does TWP Cover Every Tire Problem?
Do not assume so. The cause of the damage and the rental agreement matter.
Current National and Enterprise Roadside Assistance terms state that tire damage beyond repair resulting from driver neglect remains the renter’s responsibility. Protection products are also subject to actions that can invalidate coverage.
Ask what happens if a tire is punctured, cut or damaged beyond repair, and follow the reporting procedure in the rental agreement.
Does TWP Cover Wheels or Rims?
The Costa Rica descriptions reviewed specifically refer to tires and the windshield. They do not provide enough consistent detail to state that wheel or rim damage is automatically included.
If this matters to your trip or outside coverage, confirm it in the terms for the exact reservation.
Does TWP Have a Deductible?
The official pages reviewed do not publish one universal standalone TWP deductible that can safely be applied to every Alamo, National and Enterprise reservation.
When TWP is part of APP, NPP or EPP, the current package descriptions state that no deductible applies. For any other protection structure, use the deductible and exclusions shown for the booking and rental agreement.
A zero deductible is also different from a zero deposit. Security deposits and card authorizations are separate.
Can Credit Card Coverage Replace TWP?
Possibly, but coverage must be verified with the card issuer or benefits administrator. Ask specifically whether eligible rental-car protection in Costa Rica includes tire and windshield damage, because a general collision benefit does not by itself answer that question.
Also confirm what documentation the rental company requires before relying on outside coverage.
Is TWP Required in Costa Rica?
The official Costa Rica pages reviewed do not present TWP as a universal legal requirement to rent a vehicle.
Instead, it appears within vehicle-protection structures such as CDW-TP or APP, NPP and EPP, depending on the brand and reservation. Third-Party Liability is separate and should not be confused with TWP.
When Is TWP Worth Considering?
First check whether TWP is already included in your selected protection. If it is not, compare the additional cost with the financial responsibility you would otherwise accept for tire or windshield damage.
This decision can be more relevant for itineraries with long driving days or variable road surfaces, but it should be based on the actual rental terms rather than an assumption that every Costa Rica trip needs extra tire protection.
What Should You Check Before Pickup?
Verify:
Whether TWP is already included.
Which tire and windshield damage qualifies.
Whether wheel or rim damage is addressed.
Whether a deductible applies.
What can invalidate the protection.
Whether Roadside Assistance is separate.
How to report a puncture or windshield incident.
Whether outside coverage includes tires and glass.
Photograph the windshield and visible tire condition at pickup and report existing damage before leaving.
