Alamo, National and Enterprise Protection Packages Explained
Alamo, National and Enterprise use different names for their Costa Rica protection packages, but the current terms reviewed describe the same four core components: Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection (CDW-TP), Tire and Windshield Protection (TWP), Deductible Protection (DP), and Third-Party Liability (TPL). The packages are called APP, NPP and EPP respectively. They are protection products under the rental agreement, not insurance policies, and exclusions still apply.
What Are APP, NPP and EPP?
The package name depends on the rental brand:
Alamo Protection Package (APP).
National Protection Package (NPP).
Enterprise Protection Package (EPP).
For the Costa Rica terms reviewed in August 2026, all three combine CDW-TP, TWP, DP and TPL. The brands describe them as bundled protection packages offered at a discounted price, but the actual charge depends on the reservation.

Check current vehicle availability, then review the package and rental terms for the exact brand, pickup location, vehicle category and dates.
What Does Each Protection Include?
Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection
CDW-TP addresses financial responsibility for damage to, loss of or theft of the rental vehicle. It is a contractual waiver rather than insurance. The waiver remains subject to the rental agreement and can be invalidated by excluded or prohibited actions.
Tire and Windshield Protection
TWP addresses eligible tire and windshield damage under the rental agreement. Do not confuse it with roadside assistance. The current Alamo, National and Enterprise location pages reviewed list Roadside Assistance or Roadside Protection separately from APP, NPP and EPP.
Deductible Protection
DP reduces deductible exposure for covered events. The current APP, NPP and EPP descriptions reviewed state that no deductible applies with the package. National Costa Rica also explains that DP reduces the CDW-TP and TPL deductible to zero.
Zero deductible does not mean zero responsibility in every circumstance. Protection can still be invalidated by actions identified in the rental agreement.
Third-Party Liability
TPL addresses covered damage or injuries involving other people or their property, subject to policy limits and the rental agreement.
Current Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica terms state that TPL must be satisfied unless the renter provides acceptable written proof of current liability coverage valid in Costa Rica or purchases the applicable protection package, which includes TPL.
Are APP, NPP and EPP Basically the Same?
For the current Costa Rica terms reviewed, their core structure is aligned:
APP is the Alamo package.
NPP is the National package.
EPP is the Enterprise package.
All three list CDW-TP, TWP, DP and TPL.
All three are described as protection packages, not insurance.
The reviewed package terms state that no deductible applies.
All remain subject to exclusions in the rental agreement.
Are the Full Protection Packages Required?
The complete package is not presented as the only way to rent under the current terms reviewed.
CDW-TP is listed as optional. TPL, however, must be satisfied under the reviewed terms unless acceptable written liability coverage valid in Costa Rica is provided. Buying APP, NPP or EPP is one way to satisfy that liability requirement while bundling the other listed protections.
Travelers relying on acceptable outside vehicle-damage coverage may decline the package when the rental company accepts their documentation, but TPL still has to be addressed separately.
Does the Package Eliminate the Security Deposit?
No. A zero deductible and a security deposit are separate.
The package reduces deductible exposure for covered events, but the rental company can still require a credit card, security authorization or deposit at pickup. Because official location terms can differ, verify the amount shown for the exact reservation rather than assuming that APP, NPP or EPP removes the hold.
Is Roadside Assistance Included?
Do not assume so. The current location pages reviewed list Roadside Assistance separately from the four protection-package components.
Roadside products can address services such as non-accident towing, lockout assistance, jump-starts or fuel delivery, depending on the location’s terms. If roadside assistance matters to you, check whether it must be selected separately.
What Is Not Automatically Covered?
A protection package should not be interpreted as unlimited coverage.
The rental agreement can identify actions that invalidate protection. A “no deductible” package therefore reduces covered deductible exposure; it does not make every loss, misuse or contract violation covered.
Should You Choose APP, NPP or EPP?
Based on the current terms reviewed, all three packages bundle the same four core protections.
Compare the complete reservation, not only the package name. Travelers with acceptable outside vehicle-damage coverage may prefer to satisfy TPL separately, while others may prefer one bundled package.
Before booking, verify:
The package components.
Whether the deductible is zero.
Exclusions that can invalidate protection.
Whether outside CDW coverage is accepted.
How TPL will be satisfied.
Whether roadside assistance is separate.
The security authorization or deposit.
The final rate for your reservation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Alamo Protection Package?
The Alamo Protection Package (APP) currently includes CDW-TP, Tire and Windshield Protection, Deductible Protection and Third-Party Liability in the Costa Rica terms reviewed. Alamo describes APP as a protection package, not insurance, and states that no deductible applies subject to the rental agreement.
What is the National Protection Package?
The National Protection Package (NPP) combines CDW-TP, Tire and Windshield Protection, Deductible Protection and Third-Party Liability. Current National Costa Rica terms state that no deductible applies with NPP, while exclusions in the rental agreement still matter.
What is the Enterprise Protection Package?
The Enterprise Protection Package (EPP) combines CDW-TP, Tire and Windshield Protection, Deductible Protection and Third-Party Liability. Current Enterprise Costa Rica terms describe EPP as a package product rather than insurance and state that no deductible applies.
Does zero deductible mean zero risk?
No. Zero deductible applies to covered events while the protections remain valid. Actions excluded by the rental agreement can invalidate protection, so the package does not eliminate every possible financial responsibility.
Is roadside assistance included in the protection package?
The current Alamo, National and Enterprise location pages reviewed list Roadside Assistance separately from APP, NPP and EPP. Check the exact reservation if towing, lockout, jump-start or similar assistance is important.
Can credit card coverage replace the package?
Potentially for eligible damage to or theft of the rental vehicle if the rental company accepts the documentation. It does not automatically satisfy TPL. Confirm both the card benefit and the rental location’s current requirements before declining the package.
Are APP, NPP and EPP the same price?
Do not assume so. The current terms describe each as a bundled package offered at a discounted price, but the actual charge can vary by brand, pickup location, vehicle, rental period and rate.
Review current rates and rental terms before selecting a protection package.
