CDW, LDW and Theft Protection Explained
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) and Theft Protection all concern financial responsibility for the rental vehicle, but the labels are not used identically by every company. For the Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica locations reviewed, the local product is generally described as Collision Damage Waiver–Theft Protection (CDW-TP). It is a contractual waiver, not insurance, and the exact deductible and exclusions depend on the reservation.
What Do CDW, LDW and Theft Protection Mean?
Collision Damage Waiver — CDW
CDW reduces or waives all or part of the renter’s contractual responsibility for covered damage to the rental vehicle, subject to the rental agreement. Current Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica terms describe CDW-TP as a waiver rather than insurance.
Use the deductible shown for the exact booking rather than assuming one national figure. Current official Costa Rica pages are not uniform across all brands and vehicle classes.
Loss Damage Waiver — LDW
LDW is another industry term for a contractual damage waiver. National’s general guidance defines LDW as optional protection that can waive responsibility for all or part of damage to, loss of or theft of the vehicle.
National’s current Costa Rica location pages use CDW-TP instead, as do the Alamo and Enterprise Costa Rica pages reviewed. If a booking site or card benefit says “LDW,” do not assume it is a separate local product. Compare what it actually covers.
Theft Protection — TP
Theft Protection addresses covered theft or loss of the rental vehicle. In the Costa Rica terms reviewed, it is combined with CDW under the CDW-TP structure.
Do not confuse vehicle theft protection with protection for luggage or personal belongings. Alamo Costa Rica specifically states that its optional Theft Protection does not cover personal belongings.
Is CDW-TP Required in Costa Rica?
For the standard Alamo, National and Enterprise airport and tourism-location terms reviewed, CDW-TP is presented as optional, or it can be included through the brand’s protection package.
If you rely on outside vehicle-damage coverage, verify what documentation the rental location accepts and what responsibility remains under the rental agreement.

What Does CDW-TP Cover?
Under the current terms reviewed, CDW-TP contractually waives responsibility for all or part of covered damage to, loss of or theft of the rental vehicle during the rental period.
The waiver can be invalidated by actions listed in the rental agreement. “Waiver” or “protection” does not mean every type of damage or prohibited use is covered.
Third-Party Liability (TPL) is separate. CDW-TP concerns the rental vehicle; TPL concerns covered damage or injuries involving third parties.
What Deductible Applies?
A deductible is the financial exposure that can remain when the waiver applies. Current Costa Rica location pages do not support one universal CDW deductible for every brand and car class: for example, the current National SJO terms differ from current Alamo and Enterprise terms reviewed.
Theft Protection can also carry its own deductible under the standard CDW-TP structure. Protection packages may include Deductible Protection, subject to the rental agreement.
Before booking, verify:
The CDW deductible.
The Theft Protection deductible.
Whether Deductible Protection is included.
Tire and windshield protection.
Actions that invalidate the waiver.
The deductible shown during booking and in the final rental agreement governs the transaction.
What Happens If You Decline CDW-TP?
Declining CDW-TP can leave you directly responsible to the rental company for damage, loss or theft, even if you expect reimbursement later from a credit-card benefit or outside insurer.
The current Alamo, National and Enterprise terms reviewed state that when acceptable outside coverage is provided and the renter declines the local waiver or package, an additional credit-card authorization may apply.
Outside coverage and the rental contract are separate relationships. A card issuer may reimburse a covered claim only after its own claims process.
Does Credit Card Coverage Replace CDW or LDW?
Sometimes a credit-card benefit can provide collision or theft protection, but eligibility depends on the issuer, card, country, vehicle category, rental duration and payment conditions.
Confirm directly that Costa Rica is covered and obtain any written proof required by the rental company. Also verify whether the card benefit requires you to decline the rental company’s CDW or LDW. National and Alamo both direct renters to their insurer or card provider when evaluating outside vehicle-damage protection.
Credit-card vehicle protection does not automatically satisfy Third-Party Liability requirements.
How Do Protection Packages Change the Risk?
The reviewed brands use different package names: Alamo Protection Package (APP), National Protection Package (NPP) and Enterprise Protection Package (EPP).
Current Costa Rica terms describe these packages as combining CDW-TP, Deductible Protection, Tire and Windshield Protection and Third-Party Liability. They are not described as insurance.
A package can reduce deductible exposure, but exclusions and invalidating actions still apply.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Assuming CDW, LDW and TPL are the same.
Assuming theft protection covers personal belongings.
Treating one brand’s deductible as universal.
Declining CDW-TP without acceptable proof of outside coverage.
Assuming a zero deductible removes all exclusions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CDW the same as LDW?
They are closely related waiver terms, but companies use the labels differently. National’s general guidance uses LDW for a waiver covering damage, loss or theft, while the current Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica pages reviewed generally use CDW-TP. Read the local terms rather than relying on the acronym alone.
Does CDW in Costa Rica include theft protection?
For the Alamo, National and Enterprise Costa Rica terms reviewed, the local product is CDW-TP, combining Collision Damage Waiver with Theft Protection. The exact deductible, exclusions and package terms can vary, so confirm the selected reservation.
Is CDW-TP insurance?
No. The current brand terms reviewed explicitly describe CDW-TP as a contractual waiver, not insurance. It changes the renter’s financial responsibility for covered damage, loss or theft subject to the rental agreement.
Can I decline CDW-TP if my credit card covers rental cars?
Possibly, if the rental location accepts your outside coverage and you meet the issuer’s conditions. Obtain written confirmation that the benefit applies in Costa Rica and verify vehicle, rental-duration and payment requirements before pickup.
Does Theft Protection cover luggage stolen from the car?
Do not assume so. Theft Protection here concerns the rental vehicle. Alamo Costa Rica specifically states that its optional Theft Protection does not cover personal belongings. Check separate travel or personal-property coverage for luggage and valuables.
What happens if I damage the rental car?
Your responsibility depends on the protection selected, deductible, exclusions and whether the waiver remains valid. If you rely on outside coverage, the rental company may handle the charge under its contract while you pursue reimbursement separately.
Does a protection package mean zero risk?
No. A package can include Deductible Protection and may eliminate the applicable deductible, but exclusions and actions that invalidate protection still matter. Review the exact rental agreement before signing.
Review current rates and protection terms before booking.

Protection products, deductibles, acceptance of outside coverage and authorization requirements can change by brand, office, vehicle class and rate. The terms shown during booking and in the signed rental agreement govern the transaction.
