Costa Rica Rental Car Return Checklist
Before returning a rental car in Costa Rica, confirm the return location and time, follow the fuel option in your agreement, remove all belongings, inspect the vehicle, and document its condition. If staff are present, complete the return inspection and keep the receipt. If returning after hours, follow the exact branch instructions because some locations allow it and others do not.
Review current rental terms for your dates, and save this checklist for the final day of the rental.
1. Confirm the Return Location and Time
Check the rental agreement before driving toward the return location.
Confirm the exact branch, scheduled return time and whether a different drop-off location is authorized. Do not assume that an airport name means the vehicle is returned directly at the terminal or that another branch can accept it without approval.
If you will be late, contact the rental office before the contracted time.
2. Check the Fuel Option
Return the vehicle according to the fuel option selected at pickup.
Common Costa Rica options include refilling the tank yourself, prepaying for fuel, or letting the rental company replace the fuel used at a higher rate. If your agreement uses full-to-full, refuel close enough to the return location that the gauge still shows the required level.
Keep the fuel receipt and photograph the gauge before handoff.
3. Remove Personal Belongings
Check under the seats, in door compartments, the glove box, center console and luggage area.
Remove phones, chargers, passports, wallets, medications, sunglasses and travel documents. If you rented optional equipment such as a GPS, Wi-Fi device, child seat or booster, make sure it remains with the vehicle unless instructed otherwise.
4. Inspect and Photograph the Vehicle
Compare the vehicle with your pickup photos or inspection record.
Look at the body panels, bumpers, mirrors, wheels, tires and windshield. If something happened during the rental, report it and follow the rental agreement procedure.
Take final photos of all sides, the windshield, visible wheels, dashboard, odometer and fuel gauge. These are a personal record and do not replace the rental company's inspection.
5. Return the Vehicle Reasonably Clean
Remove trash, food, excessive sand and personal items.
Current Costa Rica policies can apply cleaning charges for unusually dirty upholstery, strong odors, smoking residue or pet-related contamination. Normal road dust is different from returning the interior in a condition that requires special cleaning.
6. Complete the Return Inspection
When staff are available, review the vehicle condition before leaving.
Ask whether any new damage, missing equipment, fuel difference or other charge has been identified. If something is noted, request the applicable documentation.
Keep your pickup and return photos until the rental is fully closed.
7. Review the Final Receipt
Check the return receipt or final statement when available.
Verify the rental dates, return location, fuel charges, optional products, one-way charges and any additional amount added at return. Ask about unclear charges while you are still at the office and keep the receipt with your travel records.
8. Check the Security-Deposit Release
The security authorization may not become available on your card immediately after you return the vehicle.
Current Alamo and Enterprise Costa Rica FAQs state that the authorization is released after return when there are no unresolved damages, but the bank may take additional business days to make the funds available again.
Keep the return receipt until the hold disappears.
9. Confirm After-Hours Return in Advance
Never assume every Costa Rica rental location has a key drop.
Some locations publish after-hours parking and key-drop instructions, while others state that returns outside opening hours are unavailable. Confirm the exact procedure before the office closes.
If after-hours return is authorized, photograph the vehicle, fuel gauge and odometer immediately before leaving it and follow the parking and key instructions exactly.
10. Allow Extra Time Before a Flight
Do not arrive at the rental location at the same time you need to be inside the terminal.
Allow time for refueling, traffic, finding the facility, unloading luggage, inspection, paperwork and any shuttle or transfer to the terminal. Add more margin during rush hour, heavy rain, holidays or when returning from a distant destination.
Final Return Check
Before leaving the vehicle, confirm:
Correct authorized return location.
Fuel level matches the agreement.
Personal belongings are removed.
Keys and rental equipment are accounted for.
Final vehicle photos are taken.
Any new damage is reported.
Return inspection is complete when staff are available.
You have the receipt or know how it will be delivered.
After-hours instructions were followed if applicable.
You know what to expect for the deposit release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to return a Costa Rica rental car with a full tank?
Only when your selected fuel option requires it. Full-to-full, prepaid fuel and rental-company refueling are different arrangements. Check the agreement rather than assuming every reservation uses the same rule.
Should I take photos when returning the rental car?
Yes. Photograph the exterior, windshield, visible wheels, dashboard, odometer and fuel gauge as a personal record. If staff are available, this should supplement rather than replace the formal return inspection.
Can I return a rental car after the office closes?
Only when the specific location permits it and you follow its instructions. Some Costa Rica locations offer after-hours returns, while others explicitly do not.
How long does it take to get the rental car deposit back?
The company can release the authorization after the rental closes, but bank processing can take longer. Current Alamo and Enterprise Costa Rica FAQs say the bank may take approximately 3 to 10 business days to make the amount available again.
What if I am late returning the car?
Contact the rental office as soon as you know you will be late. Charges or other conditions can apply depending on the agreement, brand and location. Do not rely on a grace period unless it is stated for your reservation.
Do I need to wash the rental car before returning it?
Normal exterior road dust does not necessarily require a wash, but remove trash and avoid returning the interior with excessive dirt, stains, odors or pet contamination that could trigger a cleaning charge.
What if I forgot something in the rental car?
Contact the rental office or customer service as soon as possible. Current Costa Rica brand FAQs direct customers who leave belongings behind to contact the company or the office.
How early should I return a rental car before a flight?
There is no single nationwide buffer. Allow time for traffic, fuel, return processing, paperwork, the rental-facility shuttle or transfer, airline check-in and security. Add more margin during busy traffic or poor weather.

Return procedures, fuel terms, late-return conditions, after-hours availability, cleaning charges and deposit processing can vary by brand, location and reservation. The signed rental agreement and location-specific return instructions govern.
